Texas Holdem' Lexington KY : Friend's and Company

This Thursday Friends and Company on Lane Allen in Lexington KY hosted a Texas Holdem' card tournament. I don't know how frequently this occurs, but if you are interested in playing cards you should call Friends and Company and see if they have any tournaments coming up or if they'll ever host one again. The crowd looked pretty full last night. I'd say they were running about 5 tables. I don't know if that is a lot or what.

Lazer Tag, Skating and Beer: Lexington KY

My name is Boozemonster and I review places and activities that I do and include them on the site as long as they involve beer or booze in any for. So I know you're all anxiously awaiting this new and fun activitiy with bated breath.

Last night, being a Thursday, a troop of us headed to Champs Skating Rink. Champs has been a fixture of Lexington KY for decades and decades, however Champs is enjoying a new larger, new, cooler facility off of Wellington Way. It resides next to Meijers off of Nicholasville Rd, for those of you who might not know the road.

What makes Thursdays so important? Well it is unlimited skating, Lazer Tag and pizza from 5 to 9pm for $12 + a $2.50 skate rental if you need skates.

Was it fun and worth the money? Would you suggest it to someone who isn't 12 years old? What was the crowd like? Tell me, Tell me please!!!!! It was fun, and no I'm not 12 years old. Is it a good deal? Absolutely, lazer tag alone runs $8 bux a game on weekends. Was the pizza decent? Absolutely, and what a variety! They had really good barbeque chicken pizza, a cheezeburger pizza with fries on it, and a few other interesting concotions that were rather tastey. All in all the lazer tag and pizza make it a definite go, but the skating rink was fun as well. My group skated for about an hour and the rest of the time was spent playing lazer tag.

The lazer tag arena was very large, had an aztec/mayan temple feel and was chock full of black lights, smoke, and nooks to hide in, not to mention loads of little kids to tag.

If you've stayed with me so far, what about the beers, right?! Well Champs does have a little lounge for the older kids as well as the adults that might be a little stressed. Their drink prices are as follows: Champs 2.75 bud lt draft 3.50 bottles .... Not exactly the cheapest beer in town, but still a welcome potential nonetheless.

So if you're looking for something fun and economical that will bring out the pre-drunk in you for a Thursday night in Lex, Champs is a possibility that I'll definitely be checking out again.

Oh yeah, and F' some ice blizzard and not having electricity.

5 Perfect Libations for Cold Weather

Winter Sucks out your soul. It's cold, damp, darker than usual, and all around sucky. For those few shitty winter months, we as citizens of Earth, have to combat that dismal melancholy with whatever weapons we can find. I find my weapon of choice to be booze. It's the perfect medicine, to warm my innereds and make me feel a little bit cheerier inside. Of course, each season has its perfect pairing and winter definitely favors certain beverages. 2 great mixed drinks are Hot Toddy and the Butter Rum. Hot toddy's are typically whisky, hot tea, honey and lemon. Butter Rums are typically water, butter, cream, rum and a few spices on top. As those are good drinks, last time I checked I wasn't a bartender. SO let's just grab a bottle and get down to business. Here are my choices:

1. Bourbon. I love bourbon, but bourbon is a cold weather drink. Nothing raises the body's temprature better than a glass of bourbon. So for the winter, I choose bourbon. It pairs well with mosts sodas (cola, lime colas, etc) and will do the job everytime. Bourbon is the perfect libation for those frosty nights. Mixable Concotions: Hot Toddy, bourbon and anything.

2. Brandy. A caramel colored libation that has roots in the wine arena. It's flavor is heavy, but not as heavy as whiskey or bourbon. Brandy is a little sweet, a tad grapey, but the high proof makes it for a good solid winter beverage. Brandy got its start as a reduced wine. Back in the day wine makers would be taxed on how many barrels they transported, so to get around this the winers started removing the water from the wine, making a high octane booze that they would then add the water back to once it had reached its destination. Well after a few trips and a good many drunken times later, the wine makers stopped adding the water back. What ended up as a concentrated wine, became a potent drink called Brandy. Brandy runs about 80 proof most of the time, and is a frugal drinker's love since it is pretty reasonable. Mixable concoctions: Hot Toddy (hot toddy= hot tea, honey, shot of brandy.

3. Red Wine. Some peeps love wine, and red goes best with chilly conditions. I don't think there is a better buzz in the world. Red wine makes me happy. . .until the next day. I don't know what it is, but red wine in whatever shape or form gives me the smileys, but if you over indulge, and I always do, be prepared for a heck of a headache. My prefs are a good solid cabranet or a sirah. Pinot Noirs are a little light so if you are trying to stay warm, pick something up that is breathy and a little heavy. Hell, maybe even a merlot!

4. Ports and Porters. One's a wine, the other is a beer. Port is a super super sweet wine. Usually high in alcohol content, and you probably can only have a glass or two before you want to wipe your tounge off. Ports get their super high sugar and alcohol from the wine makers leaving the grapes on the vine till the raisinify. Sure that is probably not a word, but it should be. Ports can be served hot, which make them extry good for colder climates. Porters are a type of heavy roasted malt beer. They take the grains and malts and everything and roast them. This makes the beers a taste sort of like coffee. They tend to be pretty heavy, but that heavy ness makes for good winter drinking.

5. Grain alcohol. For those of us who'd rather be asleep (aka passed out) than live in the cold, a good ole' glass of 190 will do the job. Why do you think some animals hibernate? Not to survive months without eating... no, they think it's f'n cold, and don't want to deal with it! Their answer is sleeping. You too can be like the bear, and that ticket to complacency is grain alcohol, the booze for those who just don't want to deal with the shit. Becareful though, make sure to dilute. You wouldn't want to die, which is definitely a possibility with grain alcohol.

I hope you've enjoyed this list. If you haven't tried port or brandy, do so. It is a perfect time for those toasty tipsters. If you can think of a good booze for blizzards let me know. Whatever the case, nothing is better for warming up than a buzz.

Puccini's Pizza is the Best in Lexington

So I've got a weakness. I love-a the Pizza, and Puccini's is the best. I can't help it. It has ruined me to other italian pies. It is by far the most superior pizza I've ever had. Tonight I had the Shrimp Catatori pizza. It has shrimp, chili oil, sun dried tomatoes, and as much awesome that can fit on a large pizza. If you haven't had Puccini's and you live in Lexington then you are missing out on some good stuff. Puccini's Smiling Teeth is the name, and my teeth would smile if they could. I love you Puccini!

New Year's Review: Champagne the two faced bitch

What did I do New Year's day? Recovered. What did I discover? Champagne is the worst hang over ever. Look, I've been drinking for a long long time, but I've never suffered like this solely because of an alcohol. Don't think I've not had my fair share of hang overs either. I have one about every other day, but Champagne is by far the worst. How do I know? That is all I drank.

New Years, no matter when or where always ends as a kind of bust. Every year you expect just crazy awesomeness, like the New Years of high school lore or perhaps like that crazy year as a sophomore in undergrad, but once you get older and more 'safe' things just aren't as spectacular as they used to be. Don't get me wrong I had lots of fun and enjoyed myself past many safety levels, but the magic wasn't there like it was in the beginning. New Year's has turned into that new car that is now 3 years old and you're still making payments on it, sure you enjoy it, but somehow it isn't as awesome as before.

Did I find myself in a strip club, bringing the new year in one dollar at a time? No that sounds way more romantic than what I did. What did I do? I got 4 bottles of 3 dollar champagne and headed to a buddies house. It was fun. I got shit canned, ate some fantastic salsa and chips and got to enjoy my time surrounded by friends.

One thing that rocks about getting older, your friends are lucrative enough to have houses and not old enough to have kids, so that means Guest bed rooms. SO rather than dump $30 or more for a cab ride that shows up at 4AM I got to crash in a pretty nice pad.

So what did I learn? 1 bottle of $3 champagne gets the party started, but 3 or more $3 bottles of champagne will ruin a day or two.

What did you do for New Years?
